Tighten, Lift and Firm Your Skin with the Silk'n Titan

This is the season of celebrations. With parties, long days and late nights, of course, we want to look our radiant best for every occasion on the calendar, whether it be extra play dates and children's school events to office gatherings and those full-on, dress up celebrations that last into the early hours. That extra holiday cheer in a glass (dehydrating) or your on-the-go schedule (exhausting) is sure to leave your skin needing a little more help afterwards.  You may find it tired looking and lackluster. I'm all about using products that can offer multiple benefits. You can confidently put your best face forward with these amazing, easy to use, must have items that are sure to add a lift and glow to your skin before the celebration and long after the party is over.

Sleek, sexy and did I mention safe and easy to use? The Silk'n Titan* is an at-home beauty device that works with our skins own healing properties giving you tighter, toned, smoother and firmer skin by helping to repair and rebuild the natural elastin and collagen. (it can also help in the fight against wrinkles and pigmentation spots. Yes please! Read here for more) The Silk'n Titan uses breakthrough technology that you'd find in professional cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists offices at a fraction of the price and in the palm of your hand for the utmost convenience. I'm in the process of my 10-week treatment plan and truly loving my "Titan Time" twice a week for just 15 minutes per area. i.e. forehead, left cheek, right cheek etc. Skin is already looking and feeling fabulous and receiving compliments.

1) I discovered doing one of  my treatments before an event/night out adds that fresh, healthy glow perfect for makeup prep.
2) Don't be afraid to use the hyaluronic gel liberally, you'll need enough to easily move the Titan on your skin. Add more when Titan doesn't glide smoothly.
3) Start at 1, 2 setting for the first minute or two of a treatment time to get going, the warm up phase. Then move up to 3-5 as you get used to it.
4) Best results come from using your Titan regularly at the 4 & 5 settings plus moving it in an upwards (anti-gravity) direction.

Extra face hydration is key and soft illumination really helps to combat that dry, dehydrated and lack luster skin. COVER FX; a line created especially for (but everyone can use) those who have rosacea, and highly sensitive skin. Their Illuminating Primer is gentle and while its water based formula means it plays nice with all types of foundations, it also gives a hydration boost over your moisturizer and before makeup. It can be worn alone for a healthy and elegant illumination, no shimmer here. You can add the Custom Infusion Drops (vitamin drops) to the primer, your moisturizer or even into your foundation. A drop or two will do the trick. They have 4 types to choose from that address skin issues and boost your routine with additional nutrients when your skin wants/needs a little more help.

Makeup Removal - Are You Doing it Well?

I'm a big fan of double cleansing my face and yes your skin will see the difference the first time you try it and you'll be hooked. The idea comes from Korean and more Eastern style skin care rituals. The 1st step of cleansing is cutting through and removing the dirt and grime of the day like dust, pollution and what you can't see, plus for those that wear makeup, even if it's just a touch of BB cream, it's the step to remove that too. There is a possibility and before you blame it all on hormones, that your breakout and some skin issues can be (not always) because your 1 tube/step cleansing practice is not cutting through makeup and dirt like it says it can. This first step should be something you can massage into skin with your fingers (wipes can be handy but very rough so that's a whole other post) and dissolve makeup and dirt gently. You'll want to look into cleansing oils and balms. Many will rinse off easily once mixed with water. There are so many types out there that now ALL skin types and preferences are catered to. Here are a few of my faves to choose from...

Tata Harper,  PUR Cosmetics, Belief, Pixi Beauty Double Cleanse by Caroline Hirons,

Once you remove what's on your skin, you can follow with Step 2. This is actually cleaning the skin itself of dead cells, oils and bacteria in pores etc. Simply follow with your favorite cleanser, just make sure it isn't harsh and stripping or drying out your skin. I purchased the Caroline Hirons x Pixi Beauty Double Cleanser at Target early 2017, not yet in Canada as of this posting, however both Target and the Pixi home site offer shipping to Canada.

Have you tried double cleansing? What is your favourite cleansing routine and products? Let us know in the comments.

Welcome to In the Beauty Lab

Hi and Welcome,

When I think of a laboratory, it's shelves and counters lined with a variety of jars and bottles just waiting to be mixed up and played with. This is what my mother's beauty items and the bathroom was for me as a young child. It was just the beginning for me and beauty products. Who knew at the time that my obsession with all things in pretty containers, a locked bathroom door, TV beauty commercials and a mom who let me play, was the real beginning of In the Beauty Lab and my official start into the beauty industry as a career. Today; my own bathroom a.k.a my beauty lab and my professional makeup kits continue to be a source of play, experimentation and discovery.  I'm a trusted source of beauty skills, talk beauty on TV and get to cross paths with so many intelligent, inspirational people.

You are imperfect, permanently and inevitably flawed. And you are beautiful.
― Amy Bloom

With my 20+ years of beauty industry experience and the amazing women (and men too) that I have worked with in my makeup chair, I realized that I needed to build a positive extension of that world for others who may not be in my chair. In the Beauty Lab is a destination for enjoying beauty, having fun, celebrating ourselves and knowing it's OK to take time for you. It's a place of product information, possibly breaking some beauty rules, professional tips and tricks, stepping outside our comfort zones and definitely not having to follow every trend of the moment. Be on your own journey to discovering what works for YOU while feeling good inside and out.

I hope each of you enjoys your time here. Please feel comfortable to comment, ask questions, share the posts and together we'll build a positive community of amazing people.  May you gain knowledge to confidently cruise the beauty aisles at your leisure and put your best face forward with or without makeup. Just as in real life things will change, evolve and move forward and so will In the Beauty Lab with you here.

Let's enjoy the beauty-full ride together.

Beauty On Repeat: Those Top Items You Can't Be Without

We all have our favorite beauty items, you know the ones we can't be without perhaps faithfully used for years or have definitely been repurchased several times. Tell me yours in the comments below I would love to discover new items. While I have a lot of faves and items I rotate with, here are a few top faves that I have personally repurchased.

Top Row (L - R)

Carmex lip balm Not the prettiest packaging but I've been purchasing it over 25 years - there is always a tube of it in coat pockets, purses and the night stand. I use the squeeze tubes at home and the pot version in my pro makeup kit. I use original formula only, the one with salicylic acid because it is the ONLY thing that will get rid of my chapped lips not cover up the problem. Plus it gives shine.

Black eyeliner is a makeup bag staple for me and my artist pro-kit. This has to be my favorite eyeliner pencil to date. The Charlotte Tilbury Rock 'N' Kohl pencil is the creamiest texture, it glides on and you can smudge it so it is the sexiest smokey eye look hence the shade name 'Bedroom Black'. I do have other shades but it is the black that I have purchased 7 of since its launch in the US.

L'Oreal mascara It's usually the Voluminous version I tend to repurchase although I have tried the Lash Paradise and like it and have bought a few. Voluminous is the brand you will find in my professional makeup kit. It's the creamy texture I love that layers easily and the price point is pretty good.

(Bottom Row L -R)

AMOREPACIFIC Treatment Cleansing Foam - I've bought this 3x (each tube lasts me 7-9 mths) and have a few friends hooked on it too. A foaming cleanser that doesn't strip my normal to dry skin type, smells wonderful and feels so luxurious on skin. A little bit is all you need.

Kypris Antioxidant Dew - if you are hesitant on using facial oils (I adore them) with your moisturizer, then perhaps you would love this instead. It is a wonderful light lotion that lightly hydrates the skin plus floods it with antioxidants in a natural and organic formula. I'm on my second one and it last about 10 months for me. Just a few drops spread on skin before my moisturizer. It's one of Kypris' top sellers and I found mine at The Cure Apothecary Toronto.

Since I've discovered Guerlain Terracotta bronzers, there is always some version of one in my makeup bag. I highly recommend this little addition of luxury to yours too. Guerlain continues to create beautiful formulas and shades and finishes of these, these are worth owning.

Tell me what are your repeats and can't be without items??

3 Ways to Wear a Bolder Lip

Lipstick is one of the easiest ways to update your makeup look or simply freshen it up season to season. I'm typically a nude lip girl for day to day style, but some how wearing a bolder lip can give you just that extra kick to your day and attitude. Check out my beauty segment from CTV Ottawa Morning Live for my Bayshore Shopping Center finds, picks and tips on going bold for yourself.
